Saltford Stragglers lost a close contest by 3-2 at Lansdown Golf Club.

After winning one game each with two games halved, it all came down to the last game which saw the visiting pair of Chris Reeves and Colin Salvage beaten 4 and 3.

For train driver Colin it had been a mammoth effort just to get to the golf course. He had obviously been looking at the wrong timetable, thinking the match was 24 hours later, but managed to get an express journey to Lansdown from Keynsham to play in that last game out.

Things had started well for Saltford with cousins Alan Burston and Brian Collings winning the opening game 2 and 1. Colin Meek and Dave Hawley, who finally managed to avoid the volcanic cloud to get back from Maderia, halved their game as did Dennis Payter and Paul Thorne who looked well set for a win until losing the last hole.

But veterans Vic Wright and former Stragglers captain Howard Stockall lost their game to set the match up for that crucial last game.

The Stragglers are away again next week at Henbury on Thursday. You will see the exclusive first report of that match on this website.

That picture shows you should never presume you are out of bounds and play on if you cannot see any white marker posts.
