Keynsham lose cold war

Keynsham first XV hosted Barton Hill O B’s at the Crown Field. They got off to a strong start but failed with a fairly simple penalty and then had what appeared to be a great try by Geraint Jones denied by the referee. Barts gradually edged their way back into the game and scored a try from a rolling maul which must have gone 15 yards to go 5 nil up. The first half continued to simmer, without coming to the boil, with both sides trying to play attacking, open rugby; perhaps the Arctic blast on Saturday had something to do with the handling errors committed by both sides. The Barts’ pack which had dominated the first half seemed to wilt a bit in the second and Keynsham were on top and clawed back 3 points from a Paul Edson penalty. Barts responded immediately with another try from a kick and chase with a fortuitous bounce to make it 12-3. More Keynsham pressure followed and they were rewarded by 3 penalties from Edson; the second came following a fine flowing move which saw young winger James Hurl-Smith just denied by a last ditch tackle. So the scores were tied with 10 mins to go. Keynsham were pressing, but gave away a penalty + 10 yards for dissent, to allow Barts the chance to attack. Several attempts later saw them squeeze over in the corner for the contentious winning try. So, just the losing bonus point for the home team. Close – but no cigar! The 2nds travelled to Yatton and, with just the bare minimum of 15 players – no luxury of substitutes then!, got off to a flier and soon had established a34-3 lead ,which is how it remained at half time. This was a great team performance with both backs and forwards combining to make life difficult for Yatton. The second half was a slightly different story when Keynsham, lacking subs, had to struggle a bit due to some niggling injuries, notably that of the prolific try scorer from the 2nd row – Owain Wynne. Yatton scored 2 tries to make it 34 – 13; but the K’s got a second wind and ran in 2 more of their own tries towards the end. Scorers for Keynsham were tries from Sam Challenger (2), Kerran Beavis, Paul Williams, Nick Hatcliffe, Ed Balmond and James Marsh. Gary Dix kicked a penalty and 3 conversions in the final score of Keynsham 44 Yatton 13. The 3rd’s travelled to Winscombe, again with the bare 15 players, and were just edged out in a closely fought contest 11-8. Mainstay of the side was Les Terr who was tigerish in the loose, but hampered by injuries, try as they might, they were just unable to score the points that could have seen them edge ahead. Keynsham scores were through a try from Ben Edwards and a penalty by John
