Keynsham 1st XI 27 – Stroud RFC 0
Keynsham put recent performances behind them, and came out of the traps running on Saturday when Stroud visited. Having put on a great show at Stroud earlier in the season the local boys showed that it hadn’t been a flash in the pan. 3 – 0 up after 11 minutes from a penalty by Paul Edson, this was quickly followed by a long distant try from Russ Tanner on the left wing. A flowing move with 5 phases and at least 12 pairs of hands culminating with a great try from Chris Bees was to follow almost immediately; Edson converted one of these and before one knew it the K’s were 15 -0 up after 16 minutes. Some turgid play followed and 3 men went into the ‘sin sin’ in short time; two from Keynsham and one from the visitors. Despite being a man down Keynsham went further ahead with a try from Ben Newman. And so it was 20-0 at half time. In the second half Keynsham took their foot off the gas and began to panic about getting the fourth, and decisive, try which would give them a league bonus point. Many opportunities slipped away before the visitors were down to 13 with a sending off and a yellow card. At this point Keynsham secured the bonus with a try from skipper Rich Gay. Quote of the game was from a substitute forward (nameless) who when asked why he wasn’t running the line said “I can’t keep up as a player; what chance have I as a touch judge?”
Old Redcliffians 2nd XI 5 - Keynsham 2nd XI 8
A really hard, tight game was on view at Old Reds in extremely muddy conditions. Having lost the earlier match this season, Old Reds’ were after revenge. They went into a five point lead within 5 minutes, and for the next half hour pounded away at Keynsham, who with practically no ball had to defend as if their lives depended on it. A penalty, converted by John Bowden just before half time signalled a change in fortune, as, in a complete reversal, it was all Keynsham in the second half. From a rolling maul, Owain Wynne continue to make his mark by claiming the touch down that finally secured a well fought victory. And so the double was done.
Keynsham 3rd XI 19 – Bristol Harlequins 2nd X1 32
This was a closer game than the score line indicated as some poor tackling led to a couple of soft tries to the visitors. ‘Quins were much better drilled than the more casual home side however and fully deserved their win. Keynsham, as is their wont, never gave up and were rewarded by tries from James Seagar, Dave Scott and Tony Harvey. Sharing the kicking John Hoyles and Scott added a conversion each.
Keynsham 4th XI 5 – Old Bristolians Selection 24
Jack Stannard scored the only points from scrum half; Chris Griffin had a storming game; Mickey Vickers gave a vintage performance and there was some great work done by Linus Oates who made restarts his own in this enjoyable romp on the sodden back pitch at the Crown Field. Ref, Steve Barker, also had a remarkable game.
