Plans being developed to transform the 1960s town centre of Keynsham will not only help to secure the town's economic future but will also save tax payers' money, it has been claimed.
The redevelopment of the town hall site has been backed by councillors in Keynsham who have said that the retention of council jobs in the town is vital to supporting the town's High Street.
Bath and North East Somerset Council's plans to close some offices and rebuild Keynsham Town Hall will initially save £405,235 year, rising to £946,146 a year from 2022.
Keynsham Town Hall, which incorporates Keynsham Library, is to be demolished along with the rank of shops which face the clocktower square.
Although it will cost £12 million to rebuild, money will be saved in the long run.
Developers will be appointed in August and a planning application will be submitted in November.
Keynsham Councillor Bryan Organ (Cons, Keynsham east) said: "The redevelopment of Keynsham's town centre is good news all round.
"Not only is it extremely important to supporting the town's economy in the years to come, but by making the council's offices more efficient it will save millions of pounds of taxpayers' money as well."
