Will Tesco be good for Keynsham?

The new Tesco store is gradually growing on the Keynsham skyline … but will it be good for the town?

The supermarket chiefs hope to have the new superstore on St John’s Court finished in time for Christmas this year.

Work also started this week on the controversial alteration to the road configuration outside the Old Manor House where the Tesco traffic will exit onto Bristol Road.

Deadline for work to finish is October and Tesco hopes it will open in November.

The latest planning agreement provides for the following:

-contribution to off site highway improvements

-enhanced pedestrian access to High St

-financial contribution to community facilities

-implementation of a Travel Plan

-provision of CCTV cameras.

So will the emergence of the store be good for Keynsham, will it bring more customers to shop it the town and benefit other traders in the High Street?

Or will it have the opposite effect and drain the smaller shops of its customers?

And what about the road network? I am not convinced that bringing the traffic on to a main road just yards from the busiest roundabout in town is a good idea. Maybe traffic should come and go from the site onto Charlton Road. What do you think?

i agree with gizmo2 about the competition and the jobs but i am not convinced that bringing traffic out onto Bristol Road next to the old Manor House Hotel will work.

Yes it will, giving many people access to trhe store ,who live in the area it is being built. It is healthy competition for Spar shop, and hopefully also provide local people some work.
