More than 200 people packed a meeting in Keynsham over plans for homes in what was described as “the UK’s biggest cul-de-sac.”

The meeting last night at Castle School enabled residents to voice their concerns about the proposed development by Taylor Wimpey for 285 homes on Green Belt land to the south west of  the town..

Councillor Alan Hale, of Lays Drive, Keynsham, said he shared their view that the access to the land, through Park Road, was "totally inadequate".

He said: "The people that I represent don't want this to happen and I would like to see the district council turn it down.

"Park Road, which is very narrow leading to the site, would be the access to what could be the biggest cul-de-sac in the UK.

"There would be no other road into or out of the development except for an emergency access.

"At least 400 extra vehicles would be coming and going every day once the houses are built, not to mention the lorries and other heavy vehicles that residents would have to put up with during construction."

There were also concerns from residents that the sewer system had reached capacity and could not cope with any more homes.

Councillor Hale said he would press councillors to visit the site before making a decision about the development.

Bath and North East Somerset councillors are due to make a decision on the planning application on Wednesday, July 7.

The land was originally allocated for housing in Bath & North East Somerset Local Plan but the council removed it from the plan after a public outcry.

However, a government planning inspector ruled that there was a shortfall in the housing supply and put the site back in.
