Keynsham's changing skyline

The controversial Tesco store which opens next Monday is just one of the new buildings appearing on the Keynsham horizon. Only time will tell if it will bring prosperity to the High Street as many hope, others fear it will be the death knell for the town centre. Other new buildings appearing in Keynsham include the KFC complex on the Broadmead roundabout and next to it another fast food store or café. An elderly people’s home on Wellsway is being replaced by what are described as “Eco friendly” luxury flats while in Coronation Avenue a 100 new flats and houses are nearing completion. I walked through Shepton Mallet town centre recently, a pedestrian precinct with plenty of potential, but sadly many shops were shut down while a Tesco store thrived at the top of the hill. Who knows if all the shops would still be open if the big store was not there. The Keynsham superstore has celebrated its opening with a £2,000 donation to the town’s Victorian Evening charity. Store manager Rob Henderson said that Tesco will become a key part of the community. Will it become part of the community or will Keynsham become another Shepton Mallet? I hope not, what do you think? See picture gallery for the sad sight of shops closed in Keynsham.

Would nt it be a good idea to have signsdto the HIGH STREET and other great facilties actually by Tescos frontage-Big and clear !!.We desperately need to boost the numbers visting our excellent traders,no one store must have a monopoly.all possible avenues must be examined to ensure the widest advertising of all the Towns amenities, but a bove all the High Street atmosphere -while it still exists deserves I feel to be fully promoted in all localities nearby .

Tesco's is slowly killing Keynsham off, I admit i have shopped in Tesco as I dont drive, and my only other option is Iceland where i cant buy the neccessary things I require, i.e cat food and cat litter at affordable prices, but walking along Keynsham high street these last couple of weeks has been like walking in a ghost town . Just looking into the shops as you walk along you can see that the majority of them are certainly lacking in the most important commodity of all, customers.I have lived in Keynsham for nearly 40 years and am sad to see its slow demise.

All these negative remarks for Tesco in Keynsham make me angry, for me and lots of other mums and grandmothers it is right up our street so to speak - at last. No more treking up the ring road or going on a slow crawl to Brislington! Lots of choice, efficiency, fresh produce, special offers Tesco has it all. I am a number one fan!

I further agree, what are Co-op playing at? that standards of the Co-op stores are nothing short of terrible! Merchandising standards are sloppy, the iles are very hard to move around and the staff in general makes it clear that they don't want to be working.

I must add this is not just Keynsham Co-op this is just about every Co-op store i have been in. Yet a company like Co-op you would expect standards to be much higher.

I agree with Trucks79. This new store will give competition to the other stores such as Coop. Hopefully the standards at Coop will go up dramatically when Tesco shows them how produce should be presented and sold.
