Childminders, nannies and people who work with children in nurseries and schools in the Keynsham area have the chance to brush up on their resuscitation skills at a special free seminar.

The two hour evening session could help save a child’s life and will show people how to act when a child falls unconscious, is choking or needs resuscitating.

The event on Wednesday February 3 will be held in the specialist First Aid training facilities of Acorn Health and Safety in Tower Road, Warmley with experts on hand to answer questions and provide practical demonstrations.

Under Ofsted regulations people who work with children need to have up-to-date first aid training so they can act in an emergency.

Danny Street of Acorn Health and Safety said: “This free session will help those who have their First Aid Certificate to keep up to date and take part in some practical exercises.

“It will also be a good introduction for people who work with children or want a career in that area as there will be experts on hand to advise them on the qualifications they need for the jobs they are taking on.

“People and organisations that deal with children need to comply with a number of Health and Safety Regulations but it is important that people do not just get a certificate so they can tick a box – they need to be able to save a life when called upon as they could be the first person on the scene when a child is in trouble.”

Acorn, formed in 1999, provides a wide range of specialist health and safety training sessions, including those aimed specifically at people who work with children, enabling them to achieve the Paediatric First Aid Certificate.

Places on the free seminar are limited and filling fast and Acorn will put on a second session if it is over-subscribed. To book a place call 0845 257 1231.

Full courses, which over 12 hours, give people the theoretical and practical skills to deal with first aid emergencies in children and babies are being held in Bristol on February 13 and 20.

Candidates are taught about personal safety; how to assess an incident and record and report on an incident; what to keep in a first aid kit; and the legislation associated to first aid and first aiders. Those who successfully complete the training gain a Paediatric First Aid certificate which is valid for three years.
