Snow forecast for Keynsham on Friday and Saturday could bring local roads to a standstill, we are being warned
With temperatures this week struggling to get above freezing, forecasters say the arrival of snow could bring local roads to a standstill and affect local services.
Traffic was delayed on the A431 this moring after a motorbike accident between Bitton and Bath on a road that motorists described as very icy.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to watch the weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
A spokesman said: "If bad weather is due, do the weekly shop early so you don't find yourself needing supplies and being forced to drive when the weather comes in. If you can, work from home, many employers now allow this."
Before driving, motorists are urged to check their tyres and anti-freeze level, check and clean lights and wipers and clean the windscreen, windows and mirrors.
People are also advised to carry an emergency kit which contains at least an ice-scraper and de-icer, cloths, a warning triangle, torch, blanket and warm clothes, food and drink, a first-aid kit and a map.
The fire and rescue service also advises allowing extra time to reach your destination and make sure you have more than enough fuel.
When driving in snow and ice, use only main roads and routes you know.
Drive slowly and leave at least a 10 second gap between you and the vehicle in front.
Avoid hills and winding roads where possible and drive in the highest gear possible - changing down earlier when slowing down and braking as gently as possible.
