St. Keyna Primary School, Keynsham, builds new outdoor environment to combine educational play with outside learning
The staff and children at St. Keyna Primary School in Keynsham have worked alongside local school grounds specialist Playforce to build a fun, outdoor learning environment. With unique areas created for each Key Stage, the children are now able to spend time in the open air whilst developing both educational and life skills. St. Keyna pupils were encouraged to help raise the money for the project and their imaginative and innovative ideas transformed the school grounds into an inspiring outdoor space.
According to Ofsted's 'Learning outside the classroom' report (2008), learning beyond the traditional classroom helps to improve pupils' personal, social and emotional development. A stimulating outside environment will enhance both teaching and learning experiences.
Headteacher Adrienne Hughes said: "The children love their new equipment. We were so impressed with the ways they helped to raise the money to buy it, increasing their sense of ownership in the process. It's exciting to see the , inventive and imaginative ways that they use the items now as well as how skills of co-operation and teamwork have also developed."
The new playground at St. Keyna Primary School now incorporates an exciting range of Playforce equipment including; Picnic Tables with Dry Wipe tops, a Mini-beast Exploration Table, Link Benches and a Magnetic Whiteboard.
Playforce School Grounds consultant, Michelle, says: "It's been a pleasure to work alongside the staff and pupils of St. Keyna Primary School to create a fun, outdoor space that they can all enjoy. It is inspiring to see how innovative and enthusiastic the school is and we hope that their imagination will continue to thrive with their new equipment."
