Most of Keynsham set to become a 20mph zone

People are being invited to have their say on plans to introduce 20mph limit signs to more than 180 roads in Keynsham including a long section of the Wellsway.

It follows an initial consultation by Bath & North East Somerset Council which found that residents liked the idea.The police have also welcomed the proposed speed limit across the town.

RoSPA, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, estimates that a pedestrian has a 90 per cent chance of surviving being hit by a car at 20mph, falling to a 50 per cent chance at 30 mph and 10 per cent at 40 mph.

Cllr Roger Symonds, the council's cabinet member for transport, said: "The council wants to improve road safety on streets across the area, including Keynsham. Part of our plans includes introducing 20mph limits in communities that want them.

"We have made some changes to the Keynsham proposals since the last consultation. I hope people take this opportunity to have their say."

The additional roads included in the proposal following the initial consultation are Charlton Road, extending from the High Street to the Park Close junction, Bath Road from Bath Hill to the Chandag Road junction, Wellsway, from Bath Hill to 70 metres north of its junction with Chewton Road, and Avon Mill Lane.

No traffic calming measures will be introduced in combination with the introduction of the limits.

The council is rolling out the scheme across the district over two years, with a 20mph speed limit set for residential roads in Saltford in the second year.
