Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to test their smoke alarms when they put back the clocks this weekend
And when we change the clocks we're being reminded to test our smoke alarms too.
Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging people to take some simple steps to ensure that they have a safe winter.
Spokesman Stuart Matthews said: "A smoke alarm will buy you and your loved ones vital seconds to get out of the house if there is a fire.
"It really could make the difference between life or death. But a smoke alarm can only save your life if it is working properly. You are more than four times as likely to die in a fire if your smoke alarm is not working.
"Yet statistics have shown that, nationally, only half of all householders who own a smoke alarm say that they test it on a regular basis.
"Our advice is that when you're changing your clocks this weekend, just take an extra few minutes to test your smoke alarm at the same time. Such a quick and simple chore could literally save your life one day."
